The Etiquettes (Adab) of Reciting the Quran

Because the Quran is the speech of Allah, reciting it is an act of worship that has its own etiquettes (adab) taught by the Quran itself and the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Observing them honours the Book and deepens the benefit of every recitation.

Seek refuge with Allah before beginning. Allah says: "So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the expelled" (Surah an-Nahl 16:98). The reciter begins with A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim, and it is recommended to say Bismillah when beginning a surah.

Recite with tartil (measured, distinct recitation). Allah says: "And recite the Quran with measured recitation" (Surah al-Muzzammil 73:4). The reciter should not rush; each letter is given its due right with proper tajweed, and pauses are observed where they are required.

Be present with the heart. The purpose of recitation is reflection and action. Allah says: "Do they not then reflect on the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?" (Surah Muhammad 47:24). The reciter recites with humility, trying to understand and ponder what is being recited.

Recite in a state of purity. It is recommended for the reciter to be in a state of ablution, to face the qiblah where possible, and to sit in a clean place. Purity of body and place honours the words being recited.

Listen attentively when the Quran is being recited. Allah says: "So when the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent, that you may receive mercy" (Surah al-A'raf 7:204). Teaching children to fall silent and listen when the Quran is played is itself an act of worship and the first step in learning it.

These etiquettes are part of how the Quran was transmitted to us — with dignity, care and presence. A teacher who embodies them passes them on to the next generation, which is why authentic Quran academies teach not only the letters but the adab of the Book.
